For the American Indians the 19th century was a disaster. It started promisingly enough; there seemed to be land for everyone. But the trickle of immigrants flowing westward increased to a flood, and the two cultures glowered at each other with hatred. Crazy Horse was one of the last Indian chiefs to wage war against the settlers. He was charismatic, known for his valor and bravery, openly admired by his opponents. In 1876 he led the Sioux nation out of its reservation and into the wilderness. He held off pursuing armies for months. In the end, dressed in finest regalia, he surrendered, later to be treacherously stabbed and killed. Author: Mari Sandoz.
