Papers of Edward S. Curtis Relating to Custer's Last Battle [Hardcover] James S. Hutchins (Author, Editor), photographs by Curtis (Illustrator)

VOLUME TWO: BATTLE OF THE LITTLE BIG HORN SERIES. THE PAPERS OF EDWARD S. CURTIS RELATING TO CUSTER’S LAST BATTLE edited by James S. Hutchins. Pictorial dust-jacket, with a special photographic essay LETTING THE PHOTOS SPEAK by James S. Brust. Curtis’ papers relating to Custer’s last battle have been in existence for over 90 years and are now presented in their entirety for the first time. Curtis, well-known for his photography, became fascinated with the Battle of the Little Big Horn while visiting the battle scene during the process of creating his epic, THE NORTH AMERICAN INDIAN. He returned to Montana and interviewed White Man Runs Him, Goes Ahead and Hairy Moccasin and was stunned to find that their views differed with the prevailing accounts. Curtis’s correspondence with Lt. Colonel H. C. Bowen, Brig. General Charles A. Woodruff and his effort to get President Theodore Roosevelt to write the introduction to the proposed book are fully documented. Extensive appendices, bibliography and an annotated index are included.

In addition, James S. Brust, vintage photography expert, has contributed a special essay, LETTING THE PHOTOS SPEAK in which he used early Curtis photographs of the three Crow Scouts as a guide to finding where the photos were taken on the battlefield, thereby establishing the Crows location during the battle.
