The Crazy Horse and Crook Fight of 1876:  New Discoveries at the Battle of the Rosebud

by Keith Werts, Stevan Booras

Werts, K., and Booras, S. The Crazy Horse and Crook Fight of 1876: New Discoveries at the Battle of the Rosebud.

This newly published work presents new details about the Battle of the Rosebud. Fought on June 17, 1876, the epic battle pitted a large U.S Army force under General George Crook against a confederation of one-thousand Sioux and Cheyenne warriors led by Crazy Horse, Young Two Moon, and other prominent war leaders. Still studied by many current U.S. Army officers, the battle took place only eight days before the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Previously unknown Indian and cavalry positions are identified. The authors present a comprehensive description of the artifacts they and others recovered during twenty plus years of field research. Found on privately owned land west of Rosebud Battlefield State Park, the artifacts provide new insights into the execution of significant parts of the battle, focusing on the protracted fight between Lieutenant Colonel William Royall’s cavalry companies and the force of Sioux and Cheyenne warriors. Forty-seven aerial and ground photos along with six color maps allow the reader to easily follow the timelines and events of the marathon battle.
