Last Man Standing: William Spencer McCaskey by Dennis, Nichols, Ron & Noyes, Lee Farioli (Author)

Paperback – 2014

McCaskey may not be a household name, but he holds a couple of unique positions in American military history. As a captain and post commander of Fort Abraham Lincoln in July 1876, he had the sad task of notifying the wives of LTC George Custer and a host of other 7th Cavalrymen that their husbands had recently been killed at Little Big Horn. In 1861, McCaskey had been among the first Americans to answer Abraham Lincoln's call for volunteers to serve in the forthcoming war. When he retired as a major general on Oct. 2, 1907, not only did he end a career of 46 years in the Army, he was the last officer on duty who had carried a weapon in the Civil War.
